Old English Court

Old English Court

The chambers of the Old English Court is the oldest foreign residence surviving in Moscow. This monument of civil architecture was erected in the early 16th century and its history is closely connected with Zaryadye district, the beginning and formation of Russian-English relationship, which flourished during the reign of Tsar Ivan IV and Queen Elizabeth I. In 1555, the Moscow Company was established in London. In 1556 it received a gift from Ivan the Terrible — the house in Moscow on Varvarka street. The museum was opened in this historic building in 1994 in the presence of Her Royal Majesty Queen Elizabeth II of Great Britain.

The exhibition at the Old English Court is dedicated to the life of the English merchant house on Varvarka in the 16-17th centuries. In the recreated interiors, guests can see copies of old books and documents, as well as the reconstruction of household items that accompanied Englishmen during their travels in Russia and in dangerous sea expeditions, that brought the two powers together during the Age of Discovery.
