ST. ISAAC'S CATHEDRAL COLONNADED WALKAWAY
The Colonnaded Walkway of the St. Isaac’s Cathedral not only became a major landmark of the city, but also its biggest observation deck. To get there you have to mount over 500 steps of a spiral staircase. The view over the city is magnificent. The walkway itself is encircled by 24 columns, each weighing 64 tonnes. Auguste de Montferrand, a French architect, developed innovative engineering solutions, which allowed such massive weights to be lifted up that high. Before him similar weights had never been lifted up higher than 40 meters.
Please note!
One of the doorways leading to the observation deck is only 70 centimeters wide.
A visit to the Colonnaded Walkway is best combine with the St. Isaac's Cathedral.
