The Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts (main building)
The Pushkin State Museum holds one of Russia’s biggest collections of foreign artwork, from ancient masterpieces to contemporary art. Painting masterpieces from around the world are displayed in the Main Building, including artworks by Rembrandt, Rubens, Botticelli, Canaletto, Poussin, painters of the Northern Renaissance, and other prominent artists.
The Pushkin Museum is famous for its collection of art from the ancient world, especially ancient Greece and Rome, e.g. the famous Priam’s Treasure. The founder of the museum, Ivan Tsvetaev, envisioned it as an educational venue, so the exposition includes a vast collection of copies of antique, medieval, and Renaissance artworks, such as copies of Michelangelo’s sculptures. Another mission was to provide a place where visitors could become familiar with art and culture from all over the world, and we have been successfully fulfilling this role for over a century.
The Main Building is the museum’s primary exhibition space. Russia’s largest and most significant exhibitions take place here. In addition to the art viewing space, the Pushkin Museum also offers educational programs, lectures on the history of art and architecture, guided tours and meetings with curators, public discussions and panels on contemporary art, educational events and workshops for children and adults, including people with special needs, and concerts of classical and modern music.
