Vasily Dmitrievich Polenov (1844–1927) is a master of universal talent, an innovator of landscape painting, the author of a large-scale series of paintings From the Life of Christ, an outstanding teacher, theater artist, architect and public figure. The exposition, which amply presents all aspects of Polenov’s artistic activity, will, for the first time, focus on the master’s teaching principles. The section dedicated to the pedagogical activity of the artist will allow re-thinking the significance of his contribution to the development of the “Moscow painting school” at the turn of the 20th century.

The exhibition will feature over 150 works from the collections of 16 Russian museums and from private collections, which cover different periods and sides of Polenov’s works: landscapes and portraits, historical painting, paintings of the Gospel series, sketches of theatrical scenery and architectural projects. For the first time, the Moscow public will see the monumental canvas Christ and the Sinner Woman provided by the State Russian Museum.
